ATHLETICS: The standout performer for Bury AC in the indoor sports hall competitions this winter has been under-13 Jack Williams, who confirmed his outstanding form by taking three medals including a gold at the Greater Manchester Championships.
In the event held at Sport City, Manchester, Williams took gold in the six-lap time trial, holding off strong challenges from athletes from Bolton and Moston in a time of 1.12.33.
The win maintained his unbeaten record in this event across all the Greater Manchester sports hall competitions this winter. Williams also took bronze in the shot putt and speed bounce events.
In the shot, his throw of 7.78m was a personal best by more than a metre. In the speed bounce, his score of 71 was just one behind the joint winners.
The youngster also represented Bury at the Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships in February.
A pupil of Phillips High School, Jack has been a member of Bury AC for two years. His hard work and dedication over this period has now started to bear fruit and augurs well for the future. Many Olympic medal winners, including Mark Lewis Francis and Kelly Sotherton, started their athletics careers in sports hall competitions.
Williams’ efforts this winter resulted in Bury taking third place in the Under-13s boys’ sports hall league – a remarkable achievement given the team comprised just him and Nicky Brisbane, who also produced several outstanding performances, never finishing worse than third and winning all his speed bounce competitions. A football injury kept Brisbane out of the Greater Manchester Championships
